A Change to Accreditation Standard #2

Written by Doug Lance on Sep 08, 2010

At the recent Teen Challenge USA Board meeting, the following change was made to Standard #2 which addresses the composition of a Teen Challenge Board.  Standard #2 now reads:

Standard 2 (NR): The composition of the BOD shall:

A. Be a majority of Assemblies of God laypersons and/or ministers.  All shall be Christians that are in harmony with the Teen Challenge Statement of Faith

B. (and) an immediate family member shall not serve as an officer of the corporation.  The immediate family members cannot comprise more than 10% of board membership.

There are four officer positions on a Board of Directors: President/Chairman, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.  What this change means is that those board members who serve as a board officer of the Teen Challenge Corporation cannot have a spouse or adult child holding one of the other three offices at the same time.  The standard allows that the spouse or adult child can be a voting member of the board, but together they can’t represent more then 10% of current board membership.  This change protects our 77 Teen Challenge Corporations across the US and Puerto Rico from the charge of nepotism that has plagued other ministries in the past.  It also provides a clean line of accountability that the IRS prefers to see in place should one of our Teen Challenge Corporations get audited.  If you have any question about this change, please don’t hesitate to contact me at dougl@teenchallengeusa.com or by calling the office at 417-581-2181 ext. 205.
