Social Media: It’s not just a fad
Wait, I don’t even know what “social media” is … what are you talking about?
Basically, it’s just people having conversations online. Those conversations are powered by Facebook, Twitter, youTube, Flickr, blogs, and many, many more — through the use of comments, ratings, tags, etc.
Are you sure it’s not a fad? What’s your proof?

Wow, communication has changed in the last few years. How can I be a part?
- Rule 1. Listen – There’s a good chance you’re already being talked about. Check out Google Alerts, and search popular media sites like Twitter and Facebook.
- Rule 2. Sign-up – Hurry, before somebody else reserves your name! Even if you don’t plan on using the account right away, reserve it now. Once somebody else reserves it, it’s gone forever. I suggest a Facebook Page and Twitter account at a minimum; other popular social sites to consider MySpace, Flickr, and youTube.
- Rule 2. Interact – Remember, it’s about dialog and conversation; think phone call, not newspaper article. You’re not utilizing “social media” if it’s a one-way street.
- Rule 3. Be Honest – When it comes to social media, “transparent” is the word of the day; in my opinion, it should be “authentic”. People want to know what’s happening with you and your organization. Don’t forget that your organization is just a collection of people. Be real.
